Fazrul Nawaz bin Shahul Hameed is a former professional footballer from Singapore who played as a forward. Known for his scoring prowess and leadership, he has contributed significantly to both club and international football. Currently, he serves as the assistant coach for the Singapore Women’s National Team.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Fazrul Nawaz was born on 17 October 1985 in Singapore. Coming from a family with a sporting background—his father was a national boxer and SEA Games medalist—Fazrul displayed athletic talent early on. In 2004, he began his professional journey with Geylang United after impressing in trials for their Prime League squad.

Rise in Club Football

Geylang United and Young Lions

Fazrul’s early years at Geylang United were promising, with 20 goals in 30 appearances. His stint with Young Lions from 2006 to 2007 helped him grow further, tallying 15 goals in 33 matches.

Success at Gombak United

Fazrul’s career peaked during his time at Gombak United (2009–2010). His impressive performance in 2010, with 18 goals in 31 matches, made him the top-scoring local player in the S.League that year.

LionsXII and Other Clubs

Fazrul’s diverse club career included playing for Singapore Armed Forces FC, LionsXII, Home United, and Tampines Rovers. At Home United, he excelled as the league’s top local scorer in 2014 with 14 goals. Injuries posed challenges during his stint with Sabah FA in Malaysia, but he rebounded strongly after returning to Warriors FC in 2015.

Final Years and Retirement

After playing for Hougang United and the semi-professional Warwick Knights, Fazrul retired in 2023, marking the end of an illustrious 19-year career.

International Achievements

Fazrul debuted for Singapore in 2005 and earned 87 caps over 12 years, scoring 14 goals. Highlights of his international career include:

  • Scoring in the 2007 AFF Championship semi-final penalty shootout.
  • Winning the AFF Championship titles in 2007 and 2012.
  • Securing a bronze medal at the 2007 SEA Games, where he netted a hat-trick in the third-place match.

Fazrul retired from international football in 2017, leaving a legacy as one of Singapore’s most consistent players.

Transition to Coaching
