Rilla Melati Bahri’s early exposure to the world of literature and education was shaped by her father, a Malay language teacher and book producer. Her childhood was immersed in the creation of Malay educational materials, which ignited her lifelong passion for language and literature. Rilla studied Theatre Studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS), earning a BA (Hons, 2nd Upper) in 1996, before pursuing a Master of Education (MEd) in Curriculum and Teaching at Nanyang Technological University Singapore from 2019 to 2021.

She founded Mini Monsters Limited to address the lack of Malay storybooks and has authored over 20 Malay titles and two bilingual books. Her work includes the pioneering bilingual picture book “Baju Melayu Ati,” which received funding from the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism. Rilla also translated “The Crane and the Crab” by former President SR Nathan into Malay.

In addition to her literary achievements, Rilla has been a trailblazer in Malay speech and drama programs in Singapore schools. She has developed educational content, trained educators, and set new benchmarks in Malay language education. Her significant roles include Writer-in-Residence at Gardens By the Bay in 2016 and at the Toji Cultural Centre in South Korea in 2017.

She serves on the National Library Board’s Malay Advisory Reading Panel and was the Chief Judge for the 2017 Asian Scholastic Picture Book Award.
